Most couples who live together will share a bedroom and a bed, but according to an NHS doctor, this is something we should avoid doing.
While it’s lovely to snuggle up with the person you love, sleeping in the same place could be having a massive impact on the quality of your sleep.
So Dr Karan Rajan, an NHS surgeon, instead recommends that you get a ‘sleep divorce’.
And this is exactly what it sounds like – sleeping separately.
He explained why he thinks this is such a good idea in a TikTok video which has since gone viral, being watched over 650,000 times.
In the clip, he said: “You should always sleep alone.
“If the other person moves around in their sleep, or snores, that will stop you getting into the deep stages of sleep your body needs to recharge, affecting sleep quality.
“Not everyone shares the same sleep cycles, forcing two people to share the same bedtime will leave one or both chronically sleep-deprived.”
The expert continued to discuss how sharing a bed with your partner can cause you to overheat, which also impacts your sleep.
“One of the triggers you need to fall asleep is a drop in core body temperature,” Dr Rajan explained.
“Sharing a bed with someone increases body heat, so it’s going to take longer for you to fall asleep.”
More than 90,000 people have since liked the video, with thousands taking the time to comment.

Another wrote: “Can we normalise this please! I love my husband but I HATE sharing a bed with him. He thinks I’m horrible for thinking this.”
Someone else replied: “My husband and I have our own bedrooms. Best sleep finally after 31 years married.”
However, Dr Rajan did accept that there were a few exceptions to the rule.
One user commented: “I sleep a million times better with someone in my bed. I have awful PTSD and nightmares and I feel safe with someone.”
He replied to their post, adding: “There’s always exceptions, specific examples like that!”
